First Day In Art Class- "Painted Papers"

Hi everyone!  It has been a while since I have written a blog post.  Since my last post: -I've bought a house. -Graduated from grad school. -Had a baby.  and as we all are--- currently surviving a pandemic.  But I am excited for the new school year, nonetheless. With the start of another school year comes the dread of creating a fun and engaging lesson for the first visit. I don't know about you, but I always have a hard time coming up with something interesting. This year I stuck with something simple yet fun.  I teach upper elementary, so each grade level did the exact same lesson-- Kwik Stix "Painted papers" using Analogous colors.  I always start my first visit to art with my rules and expecations video. Back when Bitmojis were a hit in the classroom, I made a video explaining the rules of the art room. Its only 5 minutes, keeps the kids' attention, and I don't have to say the same thing one million times--at two schools.  Next, we reviewed analogous color

"I Pledge to Be Drug Free!" Collaborative Project

It's THAT time of the YEAR! Red Ribbon Weeeeeek!!!! Lots of dressing up and saying "No" to drugs! (Remember when Red Ribbon Week was just wearing a Red Ribbon on your shirt ALL WEEK until it fell off?)

Now, we have cool themes, we get to dress up in funky ways, and learn about all the ways we can turn our backs against drugs.

I remember in school alot of us thought that drug free week was lame and a waste of time. BUT-- in all honesty we knew the importance of this week especially if we had experienced the trauma of drug related casualities. I was asked by our School Counselor to create some type of art project or lesson based on Drug Free Week. At first, I was busting my brain trying to come up with a project that would match our "Not-Disney" theme (copyright reasons). Annnndddd.... I could not think of ANYTHING. SO I decided to go simple and do a line design project.

We would draw ourselves plegding to be drug free. But, the cool part would be the line design in the background.

We would use markers to create a line design in the background using a variety of lines. Dashed, curly, diagonal, curved, squiggly-- all creative lines that could work. I thought this would look especially cool if we put all of these drawings together to create a collaborative project to show that our WHOLE school has pledged to be drug free.

...and in the end the project came along pretty well! :) Here is the finished result!

ALSO---- (Deep down inside, I LOVE the opportunity to get to dress up. I mean come on! My favorite holiday is HALLOWEEN! So, when I'm given the opportunity to dress up- IM GONE DRESS UP! Especially if creativity is involved. Check out my outfits for this years Red Ribbon Week at BES!
